Graduate Marine Engineering is a 1-year post-graduate diploma course that helps students join merchant navy as a marine engineer. After completion of the 1-year diploma, students join the ship as a junior engineer or trainee marine engineer. This 1-year course can be pursued by students with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Naval Architecture.Â

Following is a list of the top GME colleges in India (government and private) approved by the government body, DG Shipping-
1. Anglo Eastern Maritime Academy (AEMA)
Located in Khandpe, Maharashtra, Anglo-Eastern has its own shipping company and is considered one of the best GME colleges in India. The curriculum is divided into 2, 4-month semesters of classroom lessons followed by onboard training of 4 months.
The college conducts its separate entrance exam called- Anglo Eastern Maritime Academy online written test.
The institute charges a fee of INR 6.5 Lakhs for its 1-year Graduate Marine Engineering course.
Graduate Marine Engineering course Eligibility –
- Candidates should have scored a minimum aggregate of 65% marks in their B.Tech Mechanical/ Naval Architecture or Mechanical & Automation from a UGC or AICTE-approved university. Along with scoring 65% marks in the final year of the 4-year degree.
- Diploma candidates who opted for lateral entry into the 2nd year of B.Tech should have scored a minimum of 65% in their Diploma. Followed by the eligibility criteria of a 4-year degree course.
- Should have scored a minimum of 65% in PCM class 12th or as their Diploma aggregate.
English- Minimum 50% in English in class 10th or 12th or in their degree course.
Age Limit- Candidates should not be older than 28 years on the date of commencement of the course.
Physical and Medical Standards- All candidates need to clear the medical examination conducted by DG Shipping Approved Doctor.

2. Institute of Maritime Studies (IMS) Goa
Located in Bogda, Goa, IMS is a very well reputed college, known to provide the finest training for GME cadets securing its place among the top GME colleges in India. The college charges a fee of around INR 5,50,200 + INR 15,000 caution money (as mentioned on the official website) for its Graduate Marine Engineering course.
The Graduate Marine Engineering curriculum at IMS Goa has been divided into 4 months of classroom training, 2 months of workshop training, and 6 months of afloat training. The afloat training includes the candidates being sent on board ships in port, shipyards, IMS marine laboratory, etc.
The college maintains strong relations with many well-reputed shipping companies, which visit the campus for placements. 1. B.E./B-TECH in Mechanical Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering Streams OR BE/B-Tech in Marine Engineer (non-DGS approved).
2. Degree in Naval Architecture/ Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering/ Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding etc.
Maximum age: 28 years.
Minimum Marks- 50% in the final year of your 4-year degree course.
Marks In English- Minimum 50% in X or XII or Diploma or Degree.
Eye Sight- 6/6 or 6/12 in each eye or 6/18 in one eye and 6/9 in the other eye without glasses. No colour blindness is allowed.
Body Mass Index- <<25
Minimum Height and Weight- Height: 1.58m and Weight: 51 Kg

3. International Maritime Institute (IMI) Noida
IMI Noida with sponsorship from (Mediterranean Shipping Company) MSC is a great option for a 1-year Graduate Marine Engineering course. IMI Noida is a government institute, recognized by the DG Shipping and AICTE. The institute takes pride in its excellent reputation for quality training and is equipped with a maritime workshop along with the latest maritime teaching systems. To keep up with the readily changing needs and demands of the shipping industry, the courses are updated frequently.

The Institute is a part of the Great Eastern Group. The college is located in Lonavala, Maharashtra and the curriculum consists of 8 months of shore training followed by 10 months of onboard training.

5. Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies
SIMS, Mumbai, provides a 1-year Graduate Marine Engineering Course which is divided into 6-months Pre-Sea Curriculum and another 6-months of Practical Ship in Campus training. The college charges a fee of around INR 5.94 Lakhs.
The institute has a state-of-the-art infrastructure with the most advanced simulators. Along with facilities like- Integrated Gas Tanker Simulator, Lifeboat station, well-equipped classrooms, etc.
The drawback for the college lies in its extensive waiting period.

6. Shipping Corporation of India Maritime Training Institute (SCI-MTI)
SCIMTI, Mumbai is a part of the Indian Shipping Company, therefore all the officers and crew get paid in Indian Rupee. Another drawback is that there is a long waiting period after the placement. SCIMTI charges a total of INR 5 Lakhs for male candidates and INR 4.5 Lakhs for female candidates for the GME course.
Currently, SCI is the only Indian Shipping Company operating, International container services, Liquid/Dry Bulk services, LPG & LNG, Tankers, Product Carriers, Offshore services, and Passenger services. The curriculum of the GME course at SCIMTI has been split into 8 months of shore training and 10(4+6) months of structured shipboard training after which candidates can appear for their MEO Class 4 Part ‘B’ examination.

Hi Vaibhav, if you have a sponsorship of Fleet or any other reputable shipping company then you can go for Ganpat University because once you have sponsorship of a good shipping company then college does not matter.
