Salary of Chief Officer in Merchant Navy
The Chief Officer is the 2nd in command after the Captain/Master of a ship and is the head of the deck department. The chief officer is responsible for the entire cargo operations of the ship at a port. Hence, the position of Chief officer comes with many big responsibilities and there is no margin for error. Since there is a great amount of workload and responsibilities on the shoulders of a Chief Officer therefore the salary of chief officer is also quite high.
The salary of chief officer depends on their experience, the type of vessel they are sailing on, and the shipping company they are employed by. Usually, Chief officers who have more experience get paid more than those with comparatively lesser experience. The type of vessel that they sail on also plays a huge role in their salary as the salaries of seafarers sailing on tankers are comparatively more than those sailing on container ships and bulk carriers.

The salary in merchant navy vary a lot among the different types of vessels. LNG and LPG tankers pay the highest salary in merchant navy while seafarers onboard container ships and bulk carriers are paid comparatively less salary. The workload is much less onboard container ships and bulk carriers compared to tankers therefore the salaries are also much lower.
Salary of Chief Officer in LNG TankersÂ
As mentioned above LNG tankers pay the highest amount of salary in the merchant navy. The chief officer onboard an LNG tanker gets paid around 10,000$ – 12,000$. The cargo is of really high-value onboard LNG tankers therefore the salaries are also equally higher.Â
Salary of Chief Officer in LPG Tankers
LPG Tankers are also among the highest paying vessels in merchant navy. Chief Officers onboard LPG Tankers make 8000$ – 9000$ per month.
Salary of Chief Officer in Chemical Tankers
Chemical Tankers are among one of the toughest vessels to work on. Chemical Tankers mostly have short coastal run, therefore the workload is immense as the port operations are very frequent onboard chemical tankers. Chief officers get paid around 7500$ – 9000$ per month onboard chemical tankers.
Salary of Chief Officer in Crude Oil Tankers/Product Carriers
Crude Oil Tankers and Product Carriers pay almost the same amount of salary to Chief Officer in Merchant Navy. Chief officers on board these vessels are paid a monthly salary of around 7000$ – 8500$.
Salary of Chief Officer in Container ShipsÂ
Container ships are employed on liner routes and usually carry manufactured goods such as furniture, food, machinery, etc. Container ships pay a comparatively lesser amount of salary. Chief Officers onboard container ships get paid around 6500$ – 8000$ per month.
Salary of Chief Officer in Bulk CarriersÂ
Bulk Carriers carry dry bulk cargoes such as coal, grain, ore, copper, etc. Chief officers onboard bulk carriers are paid in the same range as those on container ships. They are paid around 6500$ – 8000$ per month.
Salary in Ownership And Ship Management Companies
Ship management, as the name implies, is basically concerned with the management of a ship. It is performed by independent companies that utilize ships owned by other corporations or individuals. The ship management firm oversees ships for the owner and pays him an annual fee agreed upon between the owner and the ship management company.
Furthermore, the vessel is leased to the Managing Company over a signed contract by the Ship’s owner for a given period of time. After the defined period, the owner may either continue with the same company or if he’s dissatisfied with the Managing Firm’s work, he/she could move over to a different Management Company. It is, however, of importance, that the owner is responsible for deciding whether he/she would lease the entire ship or a portion of the services of the vessel to the Ship Management Company. So, the decision is at the Owner’s discretion.
Most ship management companies usually pay less salary compared to ownership shipping companies. Even the facilities and employee treatment provided by these management companies are of much lower standard compared to ownership shipping companies. However, these companies provide really fast promotions to their employees as they have a large fleet of vessels and they are always in need of officers in senior ranks. Therefore many seafarers prefer to stick with management companies for faster promotions.
Chief officers in most management companies are paid around 6500$ – 9500$ per month.
An Ownership shipping company possesses entire control over its fleet of vessels. The profit or loss that they make is solely theirs and they are the ones that pay for repairs, spare parts, import duties, and crew wages. Ownership shipping companies pay a really high salary to their employees, some of them even provide round the year salary. However, the promotions over here are really slow as they have a limited number of vessels and very few vacancies.
Chief Officers in Ownership companies earn in the range of 8000$ – 11000$.
