compressed air its used in ship

What is compressed air? Where do we need compressed air on the ship? How air is compressed on a ship?

Air is made of molecules, which are loosely packed under atmospheric pressure. When this air is put in an enclosed space and force is applied on it, its volume decreases and pressure increases. This is called compressed air.

Where is compressed air used on ship?

This compressed air is used in ships for starting the Main engine of ships. This big-size engine takes around 30 bar pressure for cranking the engine. It is also used for generators, auxiliary engines, deck side operation, safety systems, chipping, drilling, buffing, pressure water jet cleaning, etc.

How is air compressed on ship?

The process of compressing the air requires work to be done upon the air, the compressor must be driven by a prime mover like a motor or engine.During the downward motion of the piston from TDC TO BDC pressure drops in the cylinder below atmospheric pressure and the suction valve opens to suck the air. During this time the delivery valve remains closed. After a suction stroke, BDC TO TDC upward movement starts during which the suction valve is closed and the air is compressed during the stroke, before TDC the exhaust valve opens and delivers the compressed air into the air bottle.
