What is Feed Check Valve | Construction | Working of feed check valve| Why is it known as double shut off arrangement?
Feed check valve is one of the most important mountings of a boiler which controls the flow of water from the feed pump to the boiler and further prevents the back-flow of water from the boiler to the pump, when the boiler pressure is more than the pump pressure or when the feed pump stops working.
Construction of feed check valve:
The feed check valve consists of two valves, one is Screw down valve which is connected to the boiler drum and one is a non-return valve which is connected to the feed pump. It is also known as double shut-off arrangements.
Working of feed check valve:
When the feed pump starts, the water starts flowing and passes through the non-return valve to the Screw down valve (which is manually operated) and feeds water to the water drum. In case the pump pressure is less than the boiler pressure the Non-Return valve will restrict the back-flow of water from the boiler drum which will prevent damage to the feed water pump of the boiler.
Why is it known as double shut off arrangement?
Feed check valve is often referred to as double shutoff arrangement as it has two valve mechanism, one is a screw down valve and other one is a non-return valve. Non-return valve is provided to restrict the back-flow of water or steam from the boiler drum.
Screw down valve is provided so that if in case the non-return valve malfunctions, you can you can screw down the screw down valve and overhaul the non-return valve. By closing the valve nor steam or water can back-flow.
