Ozone layer:
Ozone layer is a layer of O3 gases shielding us from harmful Ultraviolet (UV) rays, which come from the sun. This layer is present in the stratosphere. 98-99% of UV rays can`t enter this ozone layer into the earth.
Ozone depletion:
Ozone layer depletion is a chemical reaction process from CFC (Chlorofluorocarbon) the chlorine will mix with the atmosphere and come into contact with ozone gas and destroy the ozone molecules. One chlorine atom can destroy nearly 1,00,000 molecules of ozone.
Ozone-depleting potential:
Ozone-depleting potential is a measure of how much damage will be created in the ozone layer compared with a similar mass of the gas with respect to ozone-depleting potential.
ODP is expressed as a ratio of the ability of a given substance to deplete ozone relative to that of trichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11), which is considered to have an ODP of 1.0. Substances with a higher ODP value are more harmful to the ozone layer, while those with a lower value are less harmful.
For example, the ODP of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) such as CFC-11 and CFC-12 is much higher than that of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) such as HCFC-22, which are commonly used as refrigerants and solvents. The ODP of CFC-11 is around 1.0, while the ODP of HCFC-22 is around 0.05.
In response to the threat of ozone depletion, the international community has taken action to reduce the production and use of ozone-depleting substances. The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, signed in 1987, is an international treaty that aims to phase out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances, including CFCs and other harmful chemicals.
